A Comparison of Mesh Smoothing Methods

چکیده
We consider several conventional mesh smoothing approaches such as the Laplacian and bilaplacian smoothing methods, mean curvature flow (implicit implementation), and the Taubin j scheme and give a quantitative evaluation of them. To compare two close meshes having the same connectivity we consider vertex-based and normalbased L2 error metrics. We also give a visual comparison of the methods. We also compare the above mesh smoothing schemes with our method which is based on a linear diffusion of mesh normals. The method demonstrates the best performance in denoising meshes with sharp features and high resistance to oversmoothing.

A Comparison of Tetrahedral Mesh Improvement Techniques
Automatic mesh generation and adaptive reenement methods for complex three-dimensional domains have proven to be very successful tools for the eecient solution of complex applications problems. These methods can, however, produce poorly shaped elements that cause the numerical solution to be less accurate and more diicult to compute. Fortunately, the shape of the elements can be improved throug...
متن کاملGeneric attribute deviation metric for assessing mesh simplification algorithm quality
We propose a mesh comparison method using a new Attribute Deviation Metric (ADM). Considered meshes contain geometric and appearance attributes (material colors, textures, normals,...). The proposed deviation metric computes local differences between attributes of two meshes. Mesh comparison assessment can be done easily and quickly using this metric. We present an application to mesh simplific...
متن کاملMesh Smoothing Based on Riemannian Metric Non-Conformity Minimization
A mesh smoothing method based on Riemannian metric comparison is presented in this paper. This method minimizes a cost function constructed from a measure of metric non-conformity that compares two metrics: the metric that transforms the element into a reference element and a specified Riemannian metric, that contains the target size and shape of the elements. This combination of metrics allows...
متن کاملMesh Optimization Based on the Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation
The subject of mesh generation and optimization is very important in many scientific applications. In this paper, we investigate the issue of mesh optimization via the construction of Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations. Given some initial Delaunay meshes with only average quality, it is shown that the CVT based mesh optimization generates a robust, high quality mesh which does not rely critically...
